On April 9, 2009 the spirit and history Cabo San Lucas was commemorated with the launching of Tequila Arco del Cabo. This new beverage distilled in the centuries old tradition of tequila production comes in specially designed hand-blown bottles in the image of the famous arch (El Arco) at Land’s End of Cabo San Lucas.
Mike Hill, a California USA native ex-pat was inspired by Cabo’s Arch rock formations the first time he encountered them over 22 years ago. The former screenwriter turned Cabo restaurant operator married into one of Cabo’s oldest families – descendants of early ranchers and English whalers dating back to 1804. A lover of history and tradition he was destined to express his appreciation of Cabo and eventually did so by commissioning the boutique Tres Mujeres Tequila distillery in Amititan, Jalisco to create his own blend of tequila appropriately dedicated to his new home in Baja California Sur.

He designed unique bottles including a clear glass reproduction of the arch and another in a modified art deco style. The new Arco del Cabo Tequila comes in Blanco (white), Reposado – aged to 1 year, an Anejo that is aged to 3 years, and an extra Anejo that goes beyond the 3 years. Most tequilas are aged in oak white barrels (Arco del Cabo in former Jack Daniel’s barrels) hence the faint whispers of oak. |

Blanco makes the best margaritas, while the others are more for sipping slowly like a fine wine. At 35% alcohol, Arco del Cabo Blanco Tequila isn’t as harsh as other brands that in extreme circumstances could be used to power your Hummer. Take it slowly on the rocks or straight up, and you’ll savor a tapestry of desert aromas and spices. Think of it as drinkable tranquility – as a portal to the past that if taken in too great a quantity, will have you talking to your Mixtec ancestors. The new tequila is sold at Mike Hill’s MigueLocos Grill & Cantina restaurant on Miguel Hidalgo in downtown Cabo San Lucas as well in stores throughout Los Cabos.
Passionate about his tequila, Hill wrote a poem dedicated to the memory of Cabo’s predecessors that is printed on the outside of the tequila’s gift box. It reads: To the mystical natural beauty of the Arch at Land’s End in Cabo San Lucas, Standing stoic, a silent witness to the 16th century encounters between Spanish galleons and English pirates.
To the courageous pioneer families “Choyeros” of whose past we share arriving centuries ago ,to these arid shores, whose blood, sweat and tears have made Cabo what it is today, In your honor … Tequila Arco del Cabo salutes you!
After sampling the exquisite blends of Arco del Cabo and buying a bottle to take home to the missus to prove I’d been working – I decided to stay for dinner. The first thing that caught my eye on the MigueLocos’s menu was the Tequila Shrimp – sautéed with garlic, herbs, and butter. What a perfect way to end the day.
